Dr Mansoor Ahmad, former Chairman and leader for the Pharmacognosy/ Herbal Medicine/Phytochemistry/Natural Products Chemistry/Naturaceuticals/Alternative Medicine B. Pharm., M. Pharm., M. Phil., Ph.D. degree programme at the Department of Pharmacognosy, University of Karachi, has now given up the leadership to concentrate on building up a research center in herbal medicine and related Pharmacognosy research at Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences. We are looking for additional funding in this area and would be interested to hear from companies that would like to fund basic research work in herbal medicines as well as potential collaborators from other universities. We are especially interested to hear from physicians/Hakims (Traditional Healer) that would like to collaborate with phytochemists/ pharmacognosists. At present there are around 500 undergraduates studying Pharmacognosy/Herbal Medicine, with 5 other members of staff. There is a Pakistan Society of Pharmacognosy, which organizes the seminars and conferences on Herb, Medicines and therapeutics and speakers have included Physicians, Herbal Importers, professional herbalists, plant scientists, pharmaceutical manufacturers and well-known authors in the phytotherapy field. The university also has strong links with many natural product, pharmaceutical and herbal manufacturing companies.
